Scorpion Trail Loop Sedona, Arizona – Hike Review

One of our favourite hikes to date is the Scorpion Pyramid Loop Trail, nestled among Sedona’s famous red rock formations, this moderate trail provides hikers with breathtaking views of the desert landscape, including the iconic Cathedral Rock and other sandstone wonders.

The reason it has two names is because one side of the hike is the Scorpion trail and the other side is the Pyramid trail all connecting in a loop. This really was a hidden gem, it was a quiet spot compared to some of the more crowded Sedona trails, offering a more peaceful outdoor experience.

Longer or Shorter Version Hike

You have two options for hiking this trail: a shorter loop by parking at the Pyramid Trailhead, or a longer hike by starting at the Scorpion Trailhead, which includes an out-and-back segment.

Both routes offer stunning views, but the longer version, which covers the entire Scorpion Trail, is more challenging due to increased elevation gain and distance.

Pyramid and Scorpion Trail Loop (Shorter Version)
Distance: 2.2 miles roundtrip
Elevation Gain: 288 feet
Difficulty: Moderate
Time: 1 hour
Parking: There are roughly around 7 spots in the parking lot. Google Maps Location for Pyramid Mountain Trailhead

This shorter loop is great beginner-friendly trail or if you’re short on time or want to tackle multiple hikes in a day. It is recommended to go counterclockwise for a more gradual ascent and beautiful scenery.

Scorpion Trail Loop (Longer Version) – we did this one!
Distance: 4 miles roundtrip
Elevation Gain: 600 feet
Difficulty: Moderate
Time: 2 hours
Parking: There are roughly 15 spots I this parking lot. Google Maps Location for Scheurman Mountain Trailhead

The longer Scorpion Trail starts near Sedona High School and includes a downhill stretch leading to the loop. After hiking the loop counterclockwise, you’ll return uphill to the school trailhead. This option is ideal if you’re looking for a longer, more challenging hike. Parking is available near the Scherman Mountain Trailhead , where the trail begins.

Our Experience on Scorpion Trail Loop

We hiked the Scorpion Loop which was the longer version and it was amazing! The path is fairly straightforward with lots of shaded stopping points and fantastic views, the red rock is really something else. We visited this trail in May and loved how quiet it was. The pyramid side of the trail had a really cool walk along the cliffs, this was Lucas’s favourite part of the hike. It wasn’t steep or dangerous either. However the hike back uphill to the Scorpion Trail was a little steep at some points with not many shaded areas, but again great views. This side definitely got my heart rate up!

How to Hike the Scorpion Trail Loop
(Longer Version)

Trailhead: Start at the Scorpion Trailhead, located near Sedona Red Rock High School. From Sedona, take Highway 89A west, then turn left onto Upper Red Rock Loop Road. After a short distance, make a right onto Chavez Ranch Road, and you’ll find the Scorpion Trailhead parking lot near the high school.

1. Start at Scorpion Trailhead: Begin your hike from the trailhead. The first part of the trail heads downhill, giving you a scenic descent through the desert landscape. This stretch is relatively easy, but it sets you up for the loop.

2. Connect to Pyramid Trail: After hiking downhill, you’ll connect to the Pyramid Trail. At this point, you can begin the loop portion of your hike. For the best experience, hike the loop counterclockwise. This means staying on Scorpion Trail for the first half of the loop.

3. Hike the Loop: As you continue on the loop, you’ll encounter some moderate elevation gain, offering more expansive views of the surrounding red rock formations. The trail is a mix of rocky and smooth paths, making it accessible but challenging enough for a moderate hike. You’ll eventually meet back up with the Pyramid Trail as you complete the loop.

4. Return to Scorpion Trailhead: After finishing the loop, you’ll hike back uphill on Scorpion Trail to return to the trailhead near the high school. This part is more strenuous due to the elevation gain, but the views make it worth the effort.

What to Pack

Sun Protection: Sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses are a must when hiking the Scorpion Loop Trail. Most of the trail is open so good sun protection is a must.

Footwear: Be sure to wear sturdy hiking boots or trail shoes with good grip for the rocky terrain, and don’t forget moisture-wicking socks to keep your feet comfortable. If the trail is a bit uneven, ankle support can be helpful.

Water: Depending on the hike you choose you will be on the trail from 1-2 hours so water is necessary.

Weather: Check the forecast before you head out! Pack a light jacket or some layers for cooler mornings or windy stretches. During the hot summer months, wearing lightweight, breathable clothing will help keep your skin safe while staying cool. A small daypack is perfect for carrying any extra layers you might need.
