If you’re looking for an easy, beautiful desert hike with a touch of history and a lot of scenery, the Dragonfly Trail in Cave Creek is a perfect pick. Tucked inside Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area, this trail blends riparian beauty with classic Sonoran Desert landscapes — a rare mix that makes it one of the more unique hikes in the Phoenix area.
The Dragonfly Trail is a hidden gem, and if you like saguaro cacti – you’re in for a real treat! Unlike crowded hikes in Scottsdale or Camelback Mountain, this one feels peaceful and full of character. It’s easy enough for beginners, my 75 year old dad joined us for the hike.

Highlights
- Lush riparian scenery along Cave Creek (especially beautiful in spring)
- Mesquite and cottonwood trees
- Historic petroglyphs and old ranching structures
- Great wildlife spotting — lots of birds, butterflies, and (in season) dragonflies
- Water crossings during wetter months (springtime usually has flowing creek)

Trail Overview

The real highlight of this hike was the huge number of saguaro cacti. I honestly don’t think I’ve ever seen so many on a single trail before. They were everywhere — tall, quirky, and full of personality. It made the whole hike feel extra special. 🌵

What to Pack
Footwear: Be sure to wear sturdy hiking boots or trail shoes with good grip for the rocky terrain, and don’t forget moisture-wicking socks to keep your feet comfortable. If the trail is a bit uneven, ankle support can be helpful.
Water: Depending on the hike you choose you will be on the trail from 1-2 hours so water is necessary.
Weather: Check the forecast before you head out! Pack a light jacket or some layers for cooler mornings or windy stretches. During the hot summer months, wearing lightweight, breathable clothing will help keep your skin safe while staying cool. A small daypack is perfect for carrying any extra layers you might need.
Hiking Gear We Love and Use

Columbia Men’s Redmond Waterproof Hiking Shoe

Darn Tough Women’s 1/4 Lightweight – Cushion
52% Nylon
4% Lycra Spandex
These 1/4 socks are great! They offer a thin layer of cushioning along the base of the foot. They sit just above the ankle which I find is the perfect height, even in my higher boots they fit great (see image of me wearing them in my boots above).

The pic where you’re standing with all the large cacti. Where is that? Talking my daughter in a few months and they would love that spot!
There is a good cluster of them along the dragonfly trail as you go! Great for photo stops!
